Super Seniors are Super Healthy!

For the past two years group fitness instructor, Kalinder Kaur has been keeping local seniors fit and healthy at Boroondara Sports Complex (BSC).

Super Seniors, Kalinder’s specialised fitness class runs twice a week and has proved to be a hit with local seniors. Since Kalinder took over the class in 2016 attendance has increased by 150%, with approximately 20 participants attending every session.

Each session is more than your average fitness class, it is a chance for participants to connect socially. Particularly for participants who may be struggling with social isolation as they age.
The group has become a strong social group, who often participate in activities together outside the centre and catch up for a coffee after every class. As Jennifer, a regular participant, put it, “This class is good for the body, mind and spirit.”

Created to help educate seniors on the importance of keeping active as you get older, each session is designed to reduce the likelihood of falls for participants, while improving their cognitive thinking and keeping them socially engaged.

The class has been life changing for some participants, particularly John Laraatt, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2017. He said, “I have found a new lease on life and I am able to do things I couldn't do before such as getting up earlier, more energy during the day.”

Kalinder has created a safe and fun place to be for participants and they appreciate the personal touch she brings.  As John explained, “Kalinder has an understanding of my situation as she is with everyone else, it’s a really personal & caring approach that she takes.”
